Win The Shadow of the Raven Series by Chris Bishop

An outstanding historical trilogy! Chris Bishop has written a riveting edge of your seat account of such a turbulent time in England’s history. (The Book Magnet)

It’s 878 and Wessex stands alone against Guthrum’s Viking hordes as all England cowers beneath their raven banner. With his army all but annihilated in a surprise attack at Chippenham, Alfred, King of Wessex, retreats to the desolate marshes at Athelney to lick his wounds. Among the few survivors from the attack is Matthew, a novice monk who, being of noble blood, is positioned close enough to the king to witness the key events of this crucial turning point in English history. In order for them to survive Matthew must set aside his religious principles and become a warrior. As such he plays a key role when Alfred at last manages to rally his people and fight back to win a decisive victory at the battle of Edington.

Yet, even having won what is probably one of the most important battles ever fought on English soil, Alfred must still win the peace. He sends Matthew on an important mission but the small force is ambushed and whilst Matthew survives, he suffers a fearful wound which he is told will one day claim his life. Undaunted, he fights his way back to his King and to the lady he loves only to be sent off again to face an even sterner test in The Final Reckoning.

Against this backdrop of war and political upheaval, Matthew’s life is driven by obligations which reach far beyond what might be expected of one so young. As such he is forced to confront both extreme danger and terrible hardship as he struggles to reconcile his convictions with his duties – and his desires.

His short life is tainted by sadness, treachery and loss but is redeemed by love – and by his resilience in the face of adversity.
