What’s happening in Sarasota County, Florida during 2015 & 2016?

The west coast of Florida is hot. There nothing short of an explosion happening in Sarasota County in 2015 and into 2016.

  • A major museum expansion and new art museum opening planned
  • Two new glass collections donated to art institutions
  • Grand finale of the Sarasota Opera’s Giuseppe Verdi Cycle

Why now? The aging population in Florida love the arts and are eager to leave their legacy in Sarasota County. Details:

  • The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, a 266-room luxury hotel overlooking Sarasota Bay, will unveil renovations to guest rooms, suites and lobby including artwork by local students at the Ringling College + Art and Design, in the fall of 2015.
  • Additionally the coast, already known as “Florida’s Cultural Coast,” is poised to take the limelight in 2016.
  • Sarasota Opera will produce and perform its final Guiseppe Verdi production, making the Sarasota Opera the only company in the world to produce all of Verdi’s works;
  • After performing at Jacobs Pillow in August 2015, the Sarasota Ballet will return to Sarasota to celebrate its’ 25th anniversary year;
  • The Asian Art Wing at The Ringling Museum will open in early 2016, showcasing a modern wing in divergent contrast to the Italianate and subtle architecture of the rest of the estate;
  • The Sarasota Museum of Art (SMOA), a division of the Ringling College of Art + Design is slated to open in early 2017 in the renovated historic Sarasota High School;
  • The SarasotaMOD Weekend, November 6-8, 2015 will celebrate the area’s famed mid-century modern architecture with a focus on Paul Rudolph, a founding father of the Sarasota School of Architecture.
  • The Ringling Museum and the Ringling College of Art + Design will embark on plans to build structures to house the Kotler and Coville Glass Collection and the Basche Glass Collection, respectively.
  • These new happenings come of the heels of the Center for Architecture and Urbanite Theater both opened in the heart of Sarasota in 2015.
