NYC & Company celebrates 50 years of Beatlemania

Nearly 50 years ago, on 7th February 1964, a plane touched down at JFK in New York City bringing four young men from Liverpool on their first tour of the United States. The Fab Four were greeted upon arrival by thousands of screaming fans and hundreds of media and police officers.

Now, to celebrate 50 years since Beatlemania hit the United States, NYC & Company, the city’s official tourism, marketing and partnership organisation, has compiled a list of the Beatles sites and activities fans can enjoy in the city during February 2014.

The Ed Sullivan Theatre – The Beatles’ Stateside following was boosted by three consecutive appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show during February 1964. The studio where the show was filmed was re-named in its honour and now hosts the Late Show with David Letterman at Broadway and 53rd Streets. For information on obtaining audience tickets to the show, see NYC & Company’s article on TV show tapings – www.nycgo.com/articles/tv-show-tapings

Ladies and Gentlemen, The Beatles – To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four’s arrival in New York, the New York Public Library hosts an exhibition looking back at the peak years of Beatlemania and the mark it left on music, fashion, art and pop culture. Memorabilia on display includes musical instruments, posters and photographs, alongside interactive displays, screenings and panel discussions. The exhibition is at the New York Public Library Steven A. Schwarzman Building (5th Avenue / 42nd Street) from 6th February to 10th May 2014. www.nypl.org/events/exhibitions/ladies-and-gentlementhe-beatles

NYC Fab 50 concert series – From 6th – 9th February, venues across New York City will host special musical celebrations of Beatles music to benefit charitable causes. 50 bands have been invited to perform from 50 countries, with ticket prices beginning at $50. Venues include The Apollo Theater Harlem and The Hudson Theatre. www.nycfab50.com

The Fest for Beatles Fans – The Grand Hyatt New York City hosts a three day event from 7th – 9th February including music and talks by Beatles experts and contemporaries. Confirmed guests include Donovan, tribute band Liverpool and Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn. www.thefest.com

Carnegie Hall, Shea Stadium, Madison Square Garden – These three major entertainment venues are all still central to the New York City music scene. The Beatles played Carnegie Hall on their first US trip in February 1964 and when they performed at Shea Stadium in 1965, it was their largest concert to date with an audience of 55,600. Madison Square Garden is the only venue where all four members of the band played solo shows after The Beatles broke up. www.carnegiehall.org  www.liveatsheastadium.com  www.thegarden.com

The Plaza Hotel / The Warwick New York Hotel – The Beatles stayed at The Plaza when visiting New York City in 1964 and The Warwick the following year. www.warwickhotelny.com  www.fairmont.com/the-plaza-new-york

Madame Tussauds waxworks – Photograph the Fab Four in their heyday at Madame Tussauds New York (42nd Street / 7th Avenue) www.madametussauds.com/newyork/ourfigures/popmusic/thebeatles/

Strawberry Fields / Imagine Mosaic – Named after the Lennon/McCartney song Strawberry Fields Forever and located close to the Dakota building where John Lennon lived and was eventually murdered, this 2.5-acre landscaped section of Central Park was unveiled on what would have been Lennon’s 45th birthday in 1985. The mosaic which lies at the centre is a popular pilgrimage site for Beatles fans who leave flowers and fruit in the form of peace signs. www.centralparknyc.org/visit/things-to-see/south-end/strawberry-fields.html

Beatles Walking Tour – Tour company Rock Junket runs two hour walking tours of Beatles sites in Midtown Manhattan, including the Ed Sullivan Theater, Carnegie Hall and Strawberry Fields, amongst other sites. www.rockjunket.com
