Music at Leisure

Weekend houseparties for people who love music

So what’s the recipe for yet another successful Music at Leisure weekend houseparty?

First, take one of the lovely hotels we’re featuring in the coming 2012/13 Season: The historic coaching inn The Bull at Gerrards Cross mixing old and new so happily, The Quay at Deganwy, modern magnificence with stunning views across the Conwy Estuary, the glorious Queen Anne elegance of Lainston House near Winchester, and the perfect country house atmosphere of Branston Hall by Lincoln.

Next, you add musicians of international renown: the Petrof from Prague introducing us to piano trios by Lalo, Suk, Tchaikovsky, Bruch and Dvorak, with Haydn’s ever-popular ‘Gypsy Rondo’; the Carducci ranging from a Haydn string quartet new to us via Schubert’s ‘Rosamunde’ to Dvorak’s ‘American’; then the brilliant young Venetian pianist Alessandro Taverna playing from the Strauss/Dohnanyi Schatzwalzer and a Scriabin Sonata to Debussy’s much-loved L’isle joyeuse; another fine pianist Jonathan Plowright offers us among others Paderewski, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms and Chopin; and we have our first ever string trio weekend with the Pro Musica showcasing Boccherini, Beethoven, Rosza and Mozart.

Finally, stir in black-tie receptions with champagne and canapes, two full-length and different recitals (programme notes of course), great dinners with wine and the excellent company of the musicians and your fellow guests, an entertaining morning event after a full English/Welsh breakfast – and there you have it.

Full details are on their website, the passport to a wonderful way to enjoy music – at leisure.
