Festival Verdi 2016

In Parma and Busseto, Italy 1st – 30th October

Like earlier years the 2016 Verdi Festival in Parma and Busseto promises to be both a stimulating and innovative event. The Festival will feature four works this year, three of them, Joan of Arc, I Masnadieri and Don Carlo were inspired by poet and playwright Friedrich Schiller. The fourth, Il Trovatore is based on the play of the same name by Antonio García Gutiérrez.

The productions will be playing at different locations. Don Carlo and Il Trovatore at the Teatro Regio di Parma and I Masnadieri at Teatro Guiseppe Verdi di Bussato. In an exciting new development Joan of Arc will be staged at Teatro Farnese.

Teatro Farnese is a place of great beauty and has become a theatre again thanks to an agreement signed with the State Museums dell’EmiliaRomagna. The production will be directed by the renown international director Peter Greenaway. This “painter of celluloid” as he likes to call himself, will make full use of the space in Teatro Farnese with the clever use of new lighting and theatre technologies

The opening of the Festival will again be on October 1 at the Teatro Regio with a new production of Don Carlo directed by Schiller expert Caesar Mild and with sets by Maurizio Balo, Daniel Oren is the conductor The second work that will be staged at the Teatro Regio will be one of the most popular of Verdi’s works Il Trovatore.

An added bonus is the fact that Parma is one of Italy’s culinary hotspots, famous for its Parmesan, Prosciutto and Pasta. And when you are not eating or listening to opera then Parma and the surrounding area offer a wealth of cultural attractions.
