Enjoy Advent Magic in Heidelberg

Heidelberg Christmas Market open from November 27th

When the scent of freshly baked cookies and roasted almonds wafts through the crooked alleys of the Old Town and the shining lights from about 130 festively decorated stalls make the historical buildings of the former Residence City shine in a golden yellow, the famous Heidelberg Christmas Market once again casts its unique pre-Christmas spell on the city.

There’s barely any way to enjoy the Advent season more stylishly: embedded in the Baroque Old Town, with the world-famous castle towering over it, the Heidelberg Christmas Market is one of the most beautiful winter markets in Germany. From November 27th to December 22nd, it offers its guests a truly unique pre-Christmas atmosphere. Spread out across six historical squares, the magical little wooden booths and tents present arts and crafts as well as wintery treats to their visitors. Those who would like to explore the most beautiful corners of the Old Town while learning interesting information about Christmas traditions in the region are cordially invited to participate in one of the public guided tours of the Christmas Market. They take place at 6.30 PM on each of the first three Saturdays of Advent; the meeting point is in front of the main entrance of the Town Hall, at the Market Square of Heidelberg.

The Old Town offers a very special Advent ambience on December 4th, when the Market Square becomes the region’s queer meeting point on the “Pink Monday Heidelberg”: For one evening, the city hall, the Chirch of the Holy Spirit and the hotel “Zum Ritter St. Georg” will be lit entirely in pink and the residents will meet up with the queer community to celebrate “Pink Monday” together. Look forward to atmospheric illumination and a night full of Christmas music to inspire a good mood, nice people and pink mulled wine offered in a limited special-edition cup. The revenue from selling the collectors’ cups will go to AIDS-Hilfe Heidelberg e.V. From 8 PM onwards, the hotel “Zum Ritter St. Georg” will host its first “pinKnight”, turning the “Pink Monday” into a true party night with DJs and live music.

The cozy “Heidelberg Winter Forest” invites you to an idyllic Advent stroll across the Kornmarkt from November 27th to January 1st: Visitors can enjoy the culinary delights of this fairy-tale ambience between more than 100 fir trees and elegantly decorated pagoda tents, while at the same time enjoying the breathtaking view of the festively lit Heidelberg Castle.

Special skating fun under the starry sky can be found while spinning on one of the most beautiful ice rinks in Germany – right below the picturesque castle ruin on the Karlsplatz from November 27th to January 7th. Romantically as a couple, together with friends, or even with your entire family: sliding across the ice before this breathtaking backdrop is a very special experience!

If you want to recover from the pre-Christmas bustle in the Old Town, the “Baracca Zermatt” at the Bismarckplatz is the right place for you: the original Valais post cottage spirits its guests away into the Alpine world of enjoyment with its high-quality products until March 2018. In the cozy chalet, visitors can enjoy Zermatt fondue and selected Swiss wines by the warmth of an open fireplace.

Tip: “Winter Dream”, “Advent Experience” or, most recently “Chalet Magic in Heidelberg” – the all-inclusive travels of Heidelberg Marketing GmbH enable visitors to experience the former Residence City at its most beautiful in the course of a romantic winter city trip, while profiting with special offers.
