10 day Sicilian cultural tour with Battered Suitcase

New tour operator Battered Suitcase has launched a 10-day cultural tour of Sicily, taking in local historic gems and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

With each holiday tailored to suit the individual, bespoke itineraries are designed at a relaxed pace with plenty of time to also enjoy some of the best food and wine the Italian island has to offer.

As the largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily has attracted a diverse range of visitors over the centuries resulting in a fascinating mix of cultures and historic gems, many designated as World Heritage sites.

The first two nights are spent in Palermo, the island’s capital, with a day’s guided tour taking in highlights such as the cathedral and Palazzo dei Normanni, newly inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Accommodation for the next two nights is in Agrigento with visits to Segesta; the medieval mountain top town of Erice and the Valley of the Temples World Heritage Site. There’s also a chance to taste a selection of wines at the Regaleali Estate winery in the centre of the island.

Other highlights include an overnight stay in Noto and visits to the third century Roman Villa del Casale, a World Heritage site containing a large and complex collection of Roman mosaics, and the ancient Greek city of Syracuse. At one time its wealth and size were unmatched by any other city in the ancient world and today it is among the richest historic sites in Europe.

A trip to Sicily wouldn’t be complete without spending time in Catania and nearby Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, which still occasionally rains ash upon the city’s streets. The tour includes a cable car ride up Mount Etna to admire the stunning views and lunar landscape. Finally enjoy some leisure time in the famous city of Taormina; dating from the third and fourth centuries BC, it’s perched dramatically on a rocky promontory overlooking the Ionian Sea. Taormina is also home to the ancient Greek amphitheatre – Teatro Greco – one of the most well-preserved ruins on the island built early in the seventh century BC.

Prices for the Sicilian Cultural Tour are from £4,594 per person based on two sharing a room in various boutique hotels. This includes international flights from a London airport, private transfers to and from the airport in Sicily; a car with an English speaking driver/guide for eight days as well as local guides at the major sites and cities plus entry fees into attractions. The winery tour and tasting as well as several chances to sample local Sicilian delicacies are also included.
